Bison Take Down League-Leading Jackrabbits

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. - A second-half goal by junior Mariah Haberle gave North Dakota State a 1-0 victory over Summit League leading South Dakota State Sunday afternoon at Dacotah Field.

The first half featured a scoreless tie, as the Jackrabbits held a 5-3 advantage in shots. Both teams notched a pair of shots on goal in the opening frame.

In the 75th minute, Haberle scored her sixth goal of the season, as she found a spot in the top right corner over the stretched arms of SDSU goalkeeer Maggie Smither. Malley O'Brien and Roxy Roemer assisted on the goal, the second of the year for O'Brien and the eighth for Roemer. It was the 12th career goal for Haberle.

"In these tight conference games, the chances are going to be few and far between," NDSU Head Coach Mike Regan said. "We had some quality at the right time. I think when we had a chance or two, I knew we'd have a good opportunity. Mariah gave us a little bit of quality at the right time."

Roemer led the Bison with four shots, while Haberle added three. Both had two shots on goal. The Bison held a 10-8 advantage in shots, including 7-3 in the second half. Improving to 7-5 in the net, Monica Polgar had four saves. The victory moved Polgar into fourth in school history with her 24th career win.

With the win, NDSU moved into a three-way tie for first in The Summit League with South Dakota State and Denver at 4-1. It was the first loss for the Jackrabbits since a 2-0 loss to Arizona State on Sept. 10 and their first road loss since losing to Kansas 3-0 on August 19.

"At this point in the season, I think you can get tied up in looking at the standings all the time," Regan added. "Can we win at home? Can we get three points? We've got three games to go now. We're definitely in a great spot. We'll just take it game-by-game."

The Bison will host Oral Roberts on Friday night at 7 p.m.
