NDSU Edges Texas State 4-3 in 10 Innings

SAN MARCOS, Texas. – Vanessa Anderson delivered a bases-clearing double with two outs in the 10th inning and Paige Vargas pitched a complete game as North Dakota State edged host Texas State 4-3 in extra-innings on Monday, Feb. 11, in the Bobcat Classic played before 364 spectators at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
 
NDSU (3-1) is scheduled to play Northern Colorado (1-4) in the opening game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14. The Bison then play No. 14-ranked Arkansas (5-0).
 
All the scoring took place in the 10th inning as Vargas and Texas State's Meagan King hooked up in quite a pitcher's duel as the teams combined for only nine hits for nine-plus frames.
 
North Dakota State scored four times in the top of the 10th. With two outs, Lauren Reimers struck out but reached on a wild pitch, Madyson Camacho legged out an infield single and Stephanie Soriano walked to load the bases. Zoe Stavrou was issued another walk to push across Reimers.
 
Anderson, a senior first baseman from Rochester, Minn., was hitless in her first four at-bats, but drilled a bases-clearing double to right field to put the Bison ahead 4-0.
 
However, Texas State (2-2) responded with three runs in the bottom of the 10th. Hailey MacKay hit a three-run home run down the left field line with two outs. Vargas hit the next batter and walked another, but notched her seventh strikeout of the game to complete her first collegiate win.
 
Vargas allowed only eight hits and walked four batters over 10 innings. She threw 188 pitches including 113 for strikes to 43 batters faced. Vargas benefitted from a solid defense that committed no errors in 43 fielding chances.
 
NDSU finished with six hits led by Camacho, who matched a career best with three singles.
 
King (0-2) worked the first 9.2 innings before giving way to Dalilah Barrera, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. King was efficient with 108 pitches including 73 for strikes. Kennedy Cline had two hits for the Bobcats.
