BURLINGTON, Vt. - A goal by senior
Elyse Huber in the 86th minute gave the North Dakota State soccer team a 1-0 victory over New Hampshire Sunday afternoon in the championship match of the TD Bank Classic, hosted by the University of Vermont.
The Bison improved to 3-0-1 on the season, while New Hampshire dropped to 2-2. With Sunday's win and the win over Vermont on Friday night, the Bison earned the first set of road weekend non-conference wins since beating Air Force and Northern Colorado in 2014. The Bison will be back in action on Friday night, as they host Hawaii. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Dacotah Field.
"We had a great performance on Friday night (against Vermont), but we challenged our team to put together a full weekend," head coach
Mike Regan said. "New Hampshire is a very well coached team. They had a lot of attacking based players, along with plenty of experience."
The two teams were scoreless at the half. New Hampshire had a 9-6 advantage on shots in the first half, while both teams had three shots on goal.Â
"I thought they were the better team in the first half," Regan added. "We challenged the team at halftime and we were the better team in the second half. We need to be able to win tight games in the second half on Sundays."
Huber's goal in the 86th minute was her third of the weekend, as she was named the TD Bank Classic MVP.
Kate Swanis earned the assist on the play, her second of the season.
Laura Powell,
Ellie Schneider and
Dani Stuber joined Huber on the all-tournament team.Â
Huber finished with six shots, including four on goal.
Marian Taiwo, Schneider and Swanis each had a shot on goal.
Monica Polgar finished with seven saves, as she moved to 3-0-1 on the season. The victory was the 29th career win for Polgar, as she moved into third in school history in victories.Â
"Monica was one of our best performers this weekend," Regan added. "We defended well as a team, with Monica making some great saves in the net."
New Hampshire had a 16-11 advantage in shots, with both teams finishing with seven shots on goal.Â
