NDSU Drops Pair at Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. – North Dakota State lost 5-3 to North Carolina Greensboro and 13-5 to Ohio State during the second day of the Carolina Classic at Carolina Softball Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 8.
 
NDSU (0-3) is scheduled to play Southern Illinois at 9 a.m. Central Time on Sunday, Feb. 9.
 
UNCG (1-0) rallied with five late runs in the first game. Blayke Batten hit a three-run home run to left field to tie the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Maycin Brown had a RBI single to left to break the tie and a Katie Stettler ground out chased across another across the plate.
 
North Dakota State struck for two runs in the top of the second. Lauren Reimers scored on a wild pitch and a Madyson Camacho infield hit sent Dez Cardenas home. Cardenas extended the lead to 3-0 in the third with a RBI single. Kaylee Moore and Cardenas each had two hits.
 
Lainey Lyle (0-1) and Paige Vargas pitched for NDSU with Lyle taking the loss. Lyle struck out 10 and walked two over the first five-plus innings. Morgan Scott (1-0) picked up the win in relief for UNCG. Scott struck out five, allowed two hits and walked one over the final four innings.
 
Ohio State (1-1) hit four home runs, and had big innings of four runs in the third and five in the seventh in the second game. Ashley Prange finished 3 for 5 with two home runs and four RBI. Niki Carver and Avery Clark both went 2 for 4 with a home run for the Buckeyes. OSU outhit the Bison 15-7.
 
North Dakota State took a short-lived 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Montana DeCamp and Sam Koehn led off the inning with back-to-back home runs. DeCamp added a double and went 2 for 3 with two RBI, while Koehn added a sacrifice bunt with two RBI.
 
Jessica Ross (1-0) recorded the win for Ohio State, while Mac Schulz (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
