NDSU Soccer Drops Heartbreaker at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The North Dakota State women's soccer team fell in a heartbreaker Friday night, losing in double overtime at Marquette, 1-0.

The Golden Eagles (4-3-0) would get a cross in from Elsi Twombly from near the end line that was past the outstretched gloves of Sofia Howe and Kate Gibson was able to redirect the ball into the net for a winner in the 106th minute.

Howe would make a career high 12 saves in the game, but the Bison (0-6-1) close the non-conference portion of the schedule on the first overtime loss of the season for NDSU.

Both teams would generate several scoring chances in the contest. Katrina Patscot created the first real chance of the game in the 19th minute, as she sent a dangerous cross into the box, but Mikki Easter was able to get control of the cross and eliminate the Bison threat.

Marquette would generate the first shot on target in the 27th minute, as Katrina Wetherell would create a shot on a set piece that forced Howe into a save. Howe would then be called on to make back-to-back diving saves as she stopped shots from Wetherell and Alyssa Bombacino in the 29th minute.

Olivia Lovick would then challenge Easter less than a minute later with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was stopped just inside the left post.

Howe would make another diving stop in the 39th minute, as she stopped Gibson's effort from outside the penalty area. Marquette would then have back-to-back corner kicks in the 42nd and 43rd minutes, with the second corner generating a scoring chance for the hosts that would be cleared off the line.

The Bison had the first real chance in the second half as NDSU had a free kick from Ellie Schneider that was deflected and forced a diving save out of Easter to keep the game scoreless.

Marquette would hit the post in the 56th minute as Gibson's header was just out of the reach of Howe but would go off the right woodwork.

The Bison would threaten again in the 66th minute as Bella Grandbois found some space in the penalty area, but NDSU was unable to get a shot on target before the hosts were able to clear.

In the 82nd minute, Marquette had a free kick from Wetherell that forced another diving save from Howe, as she pushed the shot past the post for a corner kick.

On a counter attack in the 84th minute, Olivia Lovick battled multiple defenders to put a shot on target and force a diving stop from Easter, who just barely got fingertips on the ball to deny the sophomore in the best look from either side to that point.

Brookelyn Dew would have the final shot of regulation, sailing one wide before the game was sent to overtime.

In the 92nd minute, Howe made her 10th save of the game off of a corner kick, officially setting a new career high for the junior.

Marquette would hit the right woodwork for the second time in the game in the 95th minute as Madison Burrier headed a cross just wide.

Two minutes later, Lovick would have a shot blocked at the top of the penalty area in the 97th minute, as the Bison began to threaten the hosts. With five seconds left in the first overtime, Grandbois had a great look at the winner on a counter attack, but Easter was able to stop the shot to force a second overtime.

In the 103rd minute, Marquette registered the first shot of the second overtime, but Howe was able to make a diving stop. She would make another save a minute later before giving up the winner.

Marquette finished the game with 19 shots to five for the Bison. The hosts would have eight corner kicks to just two for NDSU. Both teams would receive one yellow card in the game.

The Bison will take a two week break from competitive play before returning to action with the beginning of Summit League play on Friday, October 1, as North Dakota State welcomes in Oral Roberts. Kickoff between the Bison and Golden Eagles to begin league play is set for 6 p.m. at Dacotah Field.
