MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The North Dakota State volleyball team battled through 31 tie scores and nine lead changes to earn a 3-2 win over Old Dominion at the Mountaineer Invitational on Friday afternoon at WVU Coliseum.
Kelley Johnson narrowly missed a triple-double after totaling a season-high 57 assists with 11 digs and career-best seven kills. It marked her second match this season with at least 50 assists.
Ali Hinze recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a season-high 19 kills and 15 digs.
The Bison (8-3) posted a season-high 73 kills with four different players reaching double figures in kills, including Hinze (19),
Alexis Boling (15),
Morgan Middleton (12) and
Arianna Blohm (12).
After both teams traded the first two sets to lock the match, 1-1, Old Dominion (7-6) took advantage of attack errors to grab a 17-15 lead in the third frame. The Bison responded to tie the set, 19-19, after
Taylor Quan was able to connect on a service ace. However, the Monarchs closed the frame on a 6-3 run to win the set, 25-22.
NDSU pushed back in the fourth set quickly doubling up Old Dominion, 10-5, following a kill by Middleton. The Bison, who never trailed in the frame, then assembled four straight points to build a 19-11 advantage after a kill from Johnson. NDSU went on to win the set, 25-18.
Both teams battled throughout the fifth frame that featured a match-high nine tie scores. NDSU grabbed a 7-5 advantage following a service ace from Blohm by the midway point. The two teams then traded points and found themselves deadlocked at 15-15. After Baily Burgess dropped in a service ace for the Monarchs, the Bison closed out the match with three straight points capped off by a service ace from Middleton to seal the set, 18-16, and the match, 3-2.
NDSU will continue its road swing and is set to begin Summit League play at Oral Roberts on Thursday. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
