Hanley’s Late Goal Gives Soccer Tie at Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jess Hanley scored a late equalizer for the Bison as North Dakota State soccer picked up a tie against The Citadel, 1-1, at WLI Field on Sunday, Sept. 3.

In the 86th minute, Hanley jumped up and headed a Kelsey Kallio corner kick from the center of the penalty area off the bottom of the crossbar and down into the net off the back of The Citadel (2-1-2) goalkeeper Nora Sampson.

The Bison (2-2-2) started strong, creating a couple early scoring chances, but the Bulldogs would strike first on a Ryleigh Jenkins shot from distance that went past the outstretched hand of NDSU goalkeeper Abby Wilkinson into the top left corner in the 19th minute.

NDSU would create more chances in the contest with several narrow misses coming off the feet of Paige Goaley and Kallio, as well Hanley and Hannah Arnold. Goaley also appeared to have won the Bison a penalty kick in the 57th minute, as the referee pointed to the penalty spot, but later changed his call.

Following the goal for the Bison, Kallio and Olivia Lovick each nearly gave the Bison the lead with late shots.

Hanley scored her first goal of the season and the her fifth of her career. It's the first true road game goal of her career. Kallio, who is the active leader in assists for the Bison, picked up the 12th of her career and moves into a tie for second on the active list for career points (20). Wilkinson finished with six saves in goal.

The Bison are scheduled to return home to Dacotah Field next week, hosting Northern Colorado on Friday, Sept. 8. The game will be streamed live on the Summit League Network.
