IOWA CITY, Iowa – Both teams combined for 35 runs in a nine-inning marathon that spanned just over four hours as the North Dakota State baseball team outlasted Iowa, 21-14, on Wednesday night at Duane Banks Field.
With the win, the Bison improve to 14-24-1 (9-8-1 Summit) on the season. It also marked the first win for NDSU over Iowa since 2006 with the Hawkeyes leading the all-time series, 6-2. With the loss, Iowa drops to 25-18 (10-8 Big Ten) on the season.
The Bison scored a season-high 21 runs with seven different players scoring multiple runs. It marked the most runs NDSU has scored in a single-game since posting 21 against Western Illinois on April 30 last season.
The Bison also connected on 21 total hits as a team, including a season-best four home runs. It marked the most hits in a single-game since recording 21 against Northern Colorado on May 14, 2022.
Colten Becker paced the Bison going 4-of-6 at the plate with two home runs and one double. He also added a season-high six RBI with three runs to his stat line.
Will Busch also tallied a career-high six RBI with three hits and two runs.
The two teams combined to use 19 total pitchers with
Matt Sargeant (1-1) earning his first win on the mound with two strikeouts over 2.0 innings.
Joey Danielson closed out the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout to earn his team-best eighth save of the season, which ranks tied for third on the NDSU single-season list.
Becker sparked the Bison with a grand slam in the opening inning to make the score 4-0 before
Will Busch added a two-run double to cap the six-run frame and increase the lead to 6-0. The Bison then went on to add two more runs in third and fifth innings to push the lead to 10-6 after
James Dunlap walked with the bases loaded.
The Bison continued to apply pressure sending across five more runs on five hits in the sixth to push the lead to 15-8. Becker started the frame with his second home run before Busch followed it up with a three-run home run of his own.
James Dunlap closed out the inning with an RBI double down the left line to make the score 15-8.
After NDSU plated two runs in the seventh, Iowa made one final surge scoring five runs in the bottom half to cut the edge down to 17-13 following a grand slam from Andy Nelson to left field. The Bison put the game out reach in the ninth with three more runs on four hits to extend the lead to 21-14 after an RBI single from Becker. Danielson went on to close out the final three outs to secure the 21-14 victory.
NDSU will be back in action hosting St. Thomas on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
