NDSU Baseball Tops South Dakota State, 11-10

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Sam Canton and Cadyn Schwabe each connected on three-run home runs to help lift the North Dakota State baseball team past South Dakota State, 11-10, on Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

After South Dakota State (18-26, 9-14 Summit) started the scoring with a sacrifice fly off the bat Dawson Parry to score a run, NDSU (17-25-1, 12-9-1 Summit) responded with five runs on four hits in the second inning to steal the lead, 5-1. Canton scored the first run after Jake Schaffner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Schwabe and Colten Becker followed it up with a pair of two RBI singles to right field to finish out the inning.

The Jackrabbits responded with six runs on four hits, including a three-run home run to regain the lead, 7-5, in the second inning. Parry extended the lead for SDSU in the fourth with an RBI single into left to make score 8-5. Canton pushed back for the Bison with a three-run home run to right field to tie the contest, 8-8, in the fifth.

The game then went scoreless for two innings until Schwabe lifted his first career home run to right field. The three-run shot put NDSU back in front, 11-8, in the eighth inning. The Jackrabbits attempted to rally in the ninth plating two runs with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, but Joey Danielson ended the frame with the strikeout to secure the 11-10 victory.

NDSU connected on 11 hits as a team with Schwabe leading the way with two hits and a career-high five RBI.

Alex Karns (2-2) earned the win on the hill tossing four strikeouts over 5.0 innings of relief work. Danielson picked up his team-high and career-best 11th save of the season with three strikeouts over the final 1.1 innings.
