FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team scored all seven runs in the first two innings to help earn a 7-4 win over St. Thomas to lock the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
James Dunlap and
Garret Hill provided some early energy for the Bison (15-25-1, 10-9-1 Summit) after delivering back-to-back doubles to center field to make score 3-0. NDSU kept the momentum going into the second pushing across four more runs on four hits.
Colten Becker started the frame with a two RBI single to right before
Sam Canton reached on an error in center field to send Hill home.
Kyle Law finished out the frame with an RBI single of his own to make the score 7-0 after two complete innings.
St. Thomas (18-20, 12-7 Summit) battled its way back plating four unanswered runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull back within three, 7-4, after Tanner Recchio notched an RBI ground out.
Skyler Riedinger and
Joey Danielson then closed out the final three frames on the mound for NDSU holding the Tommies scoreless to secure the 7-4 victory.
NDSU posted 12 hits as a team with
Cadyn Schwabe,
Will Busch and Hill each contributing two hits.
Logan Knight (4-3) made the start on the mound going 5.0 frames with four strikeouts. Riedinger added 2.0 innings of relief with two strikeouts, while Danielson finished the final frame with two strikeouts to earn the save. It marked his ninth save of the season, which ranks second on the NDSU all-time single-season list.
NDSU and St. Thomas will wrap up the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
