TAMPA, Fla. – The North Dakota State baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision at South Florida on Tuesday night at USF Baseball Stadium.
The Bison (0-4) got on the board in the second inning after
Caleb Corbin got home on a bases-loaded walk to make the score 1-0. The Bulls (3-1) responded with four runs on two hits in the third inning after Nathan Earley and Santiago Carriles delivered a pair of two RBI doubles to steal the lead, 4-1. After
Diego Trujillo lifted an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth, South Florida once again responded with three runs in the bottom half capped off with Ryan Pruitt scoring on a passed ball to stretch the edge to 7-2.
The Bison pushed back in the sixth inning after both
Kaden Connor and
Dante Smith got home on bases-loaded walks. Corbin then finished out the frame with an RBI single to left field to cut the deficit to 7-5. However, the Bulls added insurance with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to put the game out of reach and seal the 9-5 victory.
The Bison notched three hits as a team with Smith, Corbin and
Colten Becker each registering one.
Matthew Totten (0-1) made his Bison debut with one strikeout over 2.2 innings in the start.
Matt Sargeant also appeared for 2.1 frames of relief with one strikeout. The two teams combined for 25 walks and seven hit by pitches.
NDSU will wrap its midweek series with South Florida tomorrow. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
