RIVERSIDE, Calif. – North Dakota State softball opened up the series with California Baptist on Friday, splitting a doubleheader in non-conference action at John C. Funk Stadium. The Bison dropped a 2-1 decision in nine innings in game one, before picking up a 5-0 shutout win in game two.
In game one, the Lancers took an early lead, with two doubles and a single. California Baptist would load the bases, but
Addie Bowers was able to get out of the jam without any further damage, trailing 1-0. Bowers, and then
Madison Wihlm starting in the third inning, would be dominant in the middle innings, retiring the side in order in the second and third and allowing just a walk in the fourth inning.
NDSU's offense finally generated some momentum in the fifth inning, loading the bases to set up
Bella Dean with a sacrifice fly to score
Jessica Delatorre and tie the game at 1-1. However, neither team would score again in regulation.
After leaving runners on in the eighth and ninth, totaling 11 left on base in the game, NDSU gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. California Baptist got a baserunner on with a leadoff hit by pitch that appeared to be over the plate. After a sacrifice bunt moved the go-ahead run to second, the Lancers scored the winning run on an RBI single.
Lileigh Nieto led the Bison offensively, going 1-for-2 with two walks. Dean, who picked up the RBI for NDSU, had the only extra-base hit with a double. Wihlm recorded three strikeouts and just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings of relief in the losing decision.
In game two, Dean gave the Bison an early lead in the top of the first, as she hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot over the fence in left.
Amai Hanta would extend the lead in the second with an RBI single after a leadoff double from Nieto.
The Bison would capitalize on an error to plate another run in the third and
Macy Fry added a run with an RBI single in the sixth inning to put Bison up 5-0. Dean, Fry and
Star Cortez finished with two hits each in the game. Nieto also added a hit and a walk.
In the circle,
Jocelyn McClary was dominant, scattering five hits with four strikeouts to record her second shutout of the season.
The Bison will be back in action against the Lancers in the rubber match of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT from John C. Funk Stadium.
