OMAHA, Neb. –
Parker Puetz tossed six strikeouts over six innings as the North Dakota State baseball team came up short in the Summit League opener at Omaha, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Tal Anderson Field.
Kyle Law gave the Bison (2-15, 0-1 Summit) the early lead after delivering an RBI single through the right side for the 1-0 advantage in the opening frame. The Mavericks (5-10, 1-0 Summit) tied the contest, 1-1, with an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Tyler Bishop in the bottom half.
Following two scoreless frames,
Aiden Schenk put the Bison back in front, 2-1, after he lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to score Law in the fourth inning. Omaha responded in the sixth with RBI single from Hayden Lewis to the tie the game, 2-2. The Mavericks then stole the lead, 4-2, in the seventh after Jackson Trout connected on an RBI single and Nick Riggs sent an RBI triple into right field. NDSU couldn't get anything going the rest of the way and dropped the contest, 4-2.
The Bison totaled seven hits as a team with Law going 2-of-4 with one run and one RBI.
Puetz made the start totaling six strikeouts across 6.0 innings with three walks, four hits and two runs.
Zak Szabo (1-1) finished the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, two runs, three hits and no walks.
NDSU will wrap up its series at Omaha tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Game two will follow approximately 35 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
