NDSU Baseball Drops Doubleheader at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 13-5, and, 11-1, on Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

In game one, the two teams combined for 24 hits in a contest that spanned just over three hours as the Jackrabbits (7-17, 2-4 Summit) topped the Bison (4-19, 1-5 Summit), 13-5.

South Dakota State grabbed the early 2-1 lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Nolan Grawe. Kyle Law answered for the Bison after he delivered an inside the park home run to steal the lead, 3-2, in second.

The Jackrabbits responded with eight unanswered runs over the next three innings capped off by a Luke Luskey solo home run to make the score 10-3 in the fifth. NDSU attempted to get a rally going in the sixth after a Colten Becker base-loaded walk and Law lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to cut into the deficit, 10-5. However, Luskey put the game out of reach with a three RBI home run to left field in seventh and sealed the 13-5 win.

The Bison totaled nine hits as a team with Law tying a season-best four RBI.

Brayden Marks (1-4) made the start with one strikeout over 4.0 innings. Matt Sargeant also provided 1.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

After opening up a 2-0 lead over the first three innings, the Jackrabbits cracked game two open in the fourth inning pushing across three runs to increase their lead to 5-0 following Grawe stealing home. South Dakota State then extended its lead to 7-0 after Owen Siegert connected on a two RBI single. Evan Gustafson posted his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the seventh inning, but NDSU went on to drop the series finale, 11-1, in eight innings.

The Bison notched five hits as a team with Caleb Corbin going 2-of-4 at the plate, including a leadoff double in the first inning.

Jonah Walker (0-2) made the start with one strikeout over 3.0 innings. Zak Szabo added in 2.0 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

NDSU will be back in action hosting Oral Roberts on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
