GREELEY, Colo. – After battling back from a five-run deficit, the North Dakota State baseball team came up short in extra innings at Northern Colorado, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.
Northern Colorado (7-29, 5-8 Summit) opened up an 8-3 advantage after scoring six runs in the third inning capped off by a two-run single off the bat of Sam Pease.
Dante Smith sparked the Bison (5-21, 2-6 Summit) in the fourth with his first RBI triple of the season before
Diego Trujillo lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the edge to 8-5.
Blake Timmons kept the momentum going in the fifth with an RBI single to make the score 8-6.
Evan Gustafson then launched a two-run home run off the scoreboard in the seventh inning to lock the contest, 8-8. The Bears answered in the bottom half pushing across two runs with an RBI double and single to regain the lead, 10-8.
Caleb Corbin responded for NDSU reaching on an error in right field to send home
Colten Becker and Smith to tie the game, 10-10. However, Jake Bullard used an RBI single up the middle in the 10th inning to seal the 11-10 walk-off win for Northern Colorado.
The Bison tied a season-high 11 hits as a team. Corbin went 3-of-4 at the plate with three runs and a season-best three RBI. The Urbandale, Iowa native narrowly missed hitting for the cycle after posting a single, a double and a home run. Smith also went 3-of-6 at the plate with two runs and one RBI, while
Chase Womack logged his first multiple hit game after going 2-of-5 with one run.
Brayden Marks made the start tossing three strikeouts over 3.0 innings with one walk.
Zak Szabo provided 3.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts, while
Braden Gluth added 1.2 frames with two strikeouts.
Cade Wiegert (0-1) closed out the final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
NDSU will conclude its series at Northern Colorado tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. CT
