NDSU Softball Drops Doubleheader to St. Thomas

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State softball fell in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday in Summit League play at Tharaldson Park. NDSU fell in game one 10-2 and in game two 8-3 to the Tommies.

St. Thomas took an early lead in game one with a two-run home run and never trailed. The Tommies would capitalize on an error to score four runs in the third and then capitalized on two more errors to score two in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Lileigh Nieto had an RBI groundout for NDSU's first run in the fourth, scoring Bella Dean. Savannah Henzler then added a pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh to score Morgan Zimmerman.

Piper Reed gave up six runs in the loss, going 2.1 innings. Madison Wihlm tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four unearned runs with two strikeouts.

In game two, St. Thomas again took an early lead in the first with a run scoring on a throwing error. However, NDSU answered back with two runs as Dean singled home Amai Hanta and then Jessica Delatorre hit a sac fly to give NDSU a 2-1 lead after one.

St. Thomas then responded, capitalizing on another Bison error in the second to tie the game, and then used a home run and another RBI double to take a 4-2 lead in the third. St. Thomas would go on to add a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to seal the victory and the series.

NDSU added its final run on a Delatorre RBI groundout to score Cortez in the bottom of the fifth.

Hanta, Cortez, Dean and Taylinn Warren accounted for all eight NDSU hits in game two, with two each. Jocelyn McClary picked up the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits in three innings. Addie Bowers and Madison Wihlm recorded two strikeouts each in relief.

NDSU will return to action on Sunday, as the Bison open up a Summit League series against Kansas City with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Tharaldson Park.
