Drew Jones, Track & Field Assistant Coach

Drew Jones

Drew Jones joined the North Dakota State men’s and women’s track & field programs as assistant coach for the throwing events in August 2023.

Jones came to NDSU following two seasons in the same role at Idaho State University from 2021-23. He served as the throws coach at the University of North Dakota from 2014-21.

At Idaho State, Jones’ throwers captured eight Big Sky Conference titles and broke four school records in two seasons. His Bengals earned two Big Sky Outstanding Performers of the Championship honors and one Big Sky Championship MVP.

Jones coached three NCAA All-Americans in his time at UND, and helped his throwers to nine new school records and 10 individual conference titles. Between Idaho State and North Dakota, his athletes earned more than 30 qualifying bids to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.

“We’re excited to add Drew to our Bison Track & Field family, and to see him continue the growth and development of our throws crew,” head coach Stevie Keller said upon his hire. “He has shown a good track record of success, he knows our region, and he knows what it takes to get the most out of his athletes and be successful at this level.”

“I want to thank Coach Keller and his staff for this opportunity to join the Bison Track & Field family,” said Jones. “I am excited to get to work helping student-athletes create their legacy at NDSU. Go Bison!”

Jones spent five years as an assistant track & field coach at his alma mater, Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., from 2008-13. He was named the USTFCCCA Central Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013 after coaching the Division III national champion in the women’s discus. Jones mentored 15 Division III All-Americans and coached his athletes to 21 individual MIAC conference titles and four MIAC conference records.

As a collegiate athlete, Jones competed in the throwing events for Hamline from 2003-08, serving as a team captain for two seasons and earning 10 all-conference honors. He graduated from Hamline with a degree in psychology in 2008, and has since added USATF Level 1 and 2 certifications, USTFCCCA throws specialist certification, USTFCCCA strength & conditioning certification, and USA Weightlifting Level 1 sports performance coach status.
