Richard Byrd is in his first season at North Dakota State University as a volunteer assistant wrestling coach. Byrd joins NDSU staff after spending one year as an assistant coach at Minot State University. He also spent one season as a graduate assistant at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he helped coach four NAIA All-Americans.

Byrd, a three-time NAIA All-American at 125 pounds, hold the most wins in Embry-Riddle program history with 120. He placed fourth at the NAIA Championships as a sophomore, second as a junior, and third as a senior.

The Chandler, Arizona native concluded his collegiate career with a record of 120-49. Byrd was the 2005 and 2007 NAIA Western Region champion including the outstanding wrestler award in 2007.

Byrd graduated from Embry-Riddle in May 2008 with a degree in global security and intel studies.
