The 1983 Bison football team won the fourth national title in program history and the first determined on-the-field through the playoff format. Loaded with veteran ballplayers and talent, NDSU returned 34 lettermen and 18 starters from the 1982 team that went 12-1 and reached the NCAA semifinals. The Bison captured their third straight North Central Conference crown and the 15th title in 20 seasons, tying Omaha with an 8-1 record in league play. NDSU would finish 12-1 overall, beating Towson and UC Davis in the playoffs before topping Central State of Ohio 41-21 in the Palm Bowl for the national championship in McAllen, Texas. The 1983 team had nine future Bison Hall of Famers.
