A two-time All-North Central Conference free safety and honorable mention All-American from 1966 to 1968. Gehrett intercepted five passes in 1967, returning three for scores in helping the Herd to a 9-0-0 regular-season mark. He added four more interceptions in 1968 and totaled 10 pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, a blocked punt and 69 tackles as the Bison went 9-0-0. The 1968 club won the Pecan Bowl and was named the nation's top College Division team by the Associated Press. Gehrett signed with the Oakland Raiders (1969) of the National Football League and the Birmingham Americans (1972) of the World Football League.
