Schluchter was an outstanding defensive back who starred for the Bison in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A three-year starter for the Herd at strong safety and free safety, he was a two-time All-North Central Conference selection and the most valuable defensive back in the NCC as a senior. He was named Kodak/American Football Coaches Association and Associated Press first team All-America his senior yearwhen the Bison advanced to the 1981 NCAA national championship game against Southwest Texas State.
He was a team captain on that national runner-up squad. He is third in career pass interceptions with 13 and his seven thefts in his senior season is the second highest total in school single-season history. He finished his career with 208 tackles and 17 pass breakups.
His three pass interceptions in a 17-7 win over Northern Colorado helped turn an 0-2 start into a 10-game winning streak in the run to the national title game in 1981.
A native of St. Cloud, Minn., he was an all-state performer on the gridiron and a standout on the basketball court. He and his wife, Juli, live in St. Cloud, where he is in the investment business as the chief executive officer for Nies Schluchter & Associates.
