Sioux Retain Nickel Trophy With 28-21 Overtime Win Over The Bison

Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D.--North Dakota stopped North Dakota State on a fourth-and-one in overtime and held on for a 28-21 North Central Conference football victory over the Bison in the 110th meeting between the two old rivals.

It was the final NCC meeting between the schools with NDSU moving to Division I beginning with the 2004 season and UND remaining in the NCC and Division II.

UND led the entire game, scoring on the second play of the contest, but watched as the Bison rallied to tie the game at 21-21 with two touchdowns in the final 2:24 of regulation.

Trailing 21-7 with 4:30 left in the game, NDSU's Craig Dahl blocked a Sioux punt and the Bison took over on the UND 29-yard line.

It took seven plays and 2:06 of the clock but the Bison scored on a 7-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Tony Stauss to junior wide receiver Allen Burrell to cut it to 21-14.

The Bison held on the next series and forced a UND punt. The Bison took over on its own 35 with just 1:16 left in the game.

Stauss completed three key passes in marching NDSU to the UND 17 and then tried to find Burrell in the right corner of the end zone. But a pass interference penalty against UND gave the Bison a first and goal at the two with 14 seconds left.

Stauss found Burrell again on a quick slant in for the score with 10 seconds remaining and Cory Vartanian's PAT sent the game into overtime.

UND had the ball first and picked up a key first down on 3-and-12 from the 27 with an 18-yard completion from John Bowenkamp to Travis Lueck. Bowenkamp put the Sioux back up three plays later with a three yard pass over the middle to Caleb Johnson.

NDSU had an incomplete pass on first down with its overtime possession, picked up six yards on a run by Kyle Steffes, and collecte three more yards on a run by Rod Malone and faced a fourth-and-one at the 16.

Malone got the call again to the right side but was stopped inches shy of the first down and UND won its third straight over the Bison and 10th in the last 13 meetings.

Neither team mounted much of a ground game with NDSU gaining 76 yards on 37 attempts while the Sioux picked up 75 yards on 29 carries.

Stauss was 26 of 41 for 284 yards and three TDs in the air for NDSU while UND's John Bowenkamp countered with a 19 of 26 day for 249 yards and three scores. NDSU's Burrell finished with eight catches for 119 yards and two scores while UND's Lueck had six catches for 165 yards and two scores.

The win gives North Dakota sole possession of first place in the NCC with a 4-0 mark. UND is 6-1 overall. NDSU dropped to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.

The Bison remain on the road next week with a Saturday afternoon visit to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.
