Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa--Drake's three first half goals were too much for North Dakota State to overcome, as the Bison fell to the Missouri Valley Conference regular season champions 3-1 on Friday, Oct. 22. Lauren Hoguta scored once and Sinead Brown fired two goals in before the break. A crowd of 132 watched the Bulldogs hold off the Bison as Drake recorded its ninth straight game without a defeat (8-0-1).
"We had a couple of chances that just missed by inches," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "We really have to be cleaner in the back, but it was tough with a wet field tonight."
Hoguta's cross kick less than five minutes into the match started the first half scoring for Drake. The Bulldogs then got back-to-back goals from Brown at the 31- and 33-minute marks. She stole the ball from the Bison defense on the first score, netting a goal past Bison goalkeeper Kelli Reed. Two minutes later, she found the back of the net again to put Drake up 3-0 heading into the break.
The second half remained even until NDSU's Carly Christensen headed home her fourth goal of the season at 86:03. That concluded the scoring.
Freshman Katie Stombaugh replaced Reed in net and posted two saves down the stretch. Drake goalkeeper Erin Jarvis recorded five saves in the contest to garner the win.
Drake held NDSU to just one shot in the first half, but the Bison bounced back in the second half to out shoot the Bulldogs 11-10 for the match. The Bison also held a slight advantage in corner kicks at three to one.
Christensen, Erin Tierney, Ashley Chandler, Jessica Rodgers and Sarah Panzer all registered shots on goal for the Bison.
“The game itself wasn't the best game of soccer, but we got our result and did what we needed to do," said Drake head coach Corbin Stone. "The most important thing is, I think, we came out of this healthy, because North Dakota State was a very hard, physical team."
NDSU (5-8-1) plays Minnesota on Sunday, Oct. 24 in Minneapolis. Kickoff is tabbed for 1 p.m.
