
Gibbs, Bue Keep North Dakota State Women A Step Ahead of St. Edwards's Hilltoppers 72-63

KINGSVILLE, Texas--Brandee Gibbs scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead a group of four players in double figures as the North Dakota State women's basketball team stayed a step ahead of St. Edward's University in a 72-63 win Friday, Nov. 26, during the second day of the Turkey Day Shootout at Texas A&M-Kingsville's Steinke Center.
North Dakota State (4-0) is scheduled to play St. Mary's University (2-2) at Noon Saturday, Nov. 27, in the final game of the three-day tournament.
Gibbs notched her second career "daily double" as the Bison turned back the Hilltoppers (1-4). She connected on 4 of 6 from the field and all six free throw attempts. Freshman Lisa Bue recorded a season-best 11 points and seven rebounds, while Lacey Johnson tallied 12 and Danni Heintzelman added 10 points.
St. Edward's post player Sara Baca proved to be more than a handful as she netted a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds, while Jackie Saathoff scored 10.
Baca led a Hilltoppers' charge in the first half, scoring 13 of her game-high total in the opening period. Brooke Endres hit a pair of free throws to knot the game at 20-20 with 9:21 left. However, Bue and Gibbs scored inside as the Bison regained control. Heintzelman's jumper at the 3:24 mark gave NDSU's its biggest first half lead at 36-25. North Dakota State led 39-34 at halftime.
The Bison gradually added to its advantage in the second half, with the margin growing to 62-47 with 9:21 remaining on a Katie Dahlen layup. Ten of the 12 NDSU players who saw action scored in the contest.
North Dakota State held a 49-35 edge on the boards, and also shot 39.7% from the field compared to 32.2% for SEU. The Hilltoppers stayed close by committing only eight turnovers and hitting 22 of 26 from the free throw line for 84.5%. The Bison hit 12 of 14 free throws to improve to 81.4% on the season from the charity stripe.
