NDSU Receives Acceptance For NCAA Multidivisional Classification of Two Sports

North Dakota State University athletic director Gene Taylor and women's athletic director Lynn Dorn received notification of acceptance from the NCAA of the selection of wrestling and volleyball for NCAA multidivisional classification. The multidivisional classification of these two sports will provide NCAA Division I postseason opportunities in 2006-07.
NCAA legislation permits a member institution to have one male and one female sport, other than football or men's and women's basketball, classified in a division other than the one in which it is a member. Currently, NDSU is reclassifying its athletics program to NCAA Division I and as such is eligible for the multidivisional classification.
“This was a very difficult decision to select certain sports over others, but we wanted to take advantage of the rule and accelerate the opportunity for some of our athletes to qualify for NCAA postseason competition. One reason we chose wrestling was we felt it would enhance their opportunity to finalize the formulation of a conference,” stated Taylor.
Dorn agreed. “It was a very difficult decision as all of the sports warranted an earlier opportunity for postseason competition. Given the overall success of the women's program to select just one was difficult. The selection process, based upon sound rationale, gave the nod to volleyball.”
North Dakota State has 16 sports, eight for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and wrestling) and eight for women (basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, softball and volleyball).
South Dakota State University and the University of Northern Colorado, both reclassifying NCAA Division I institutions, also selected wrestling and volleyball.
