Bison Drop South Dakota State 2-0 at the Bluejay Classic

Box Score

OMAHA, Neb.--North Dakota State's Sarah Panzer and Carly Christensen each tallied goals as the Bison defeated former North Central Conference foe South Dakota State 2-0 at the Creighton Bluejay Classic. NDSU (3-4-1) went on the offensive and recorded 18 shots in the contest, the most the Bison have attempted in any game this season.

Panzer, a sophomore from Burnsville, Minn., got the Bison rolling when she one-timed a pass from Jessica Rodgers and converted the first goal of the match at 10:12. It was déjà vu for Panzer who performed the similar feat in the Bison's August 15th exhibition victory over SDSU. Panzer started the scoring in NDSU's 2-0 exhibition win.

Just before half-time, Christensen worked her way through the Jackrabbit defense and drew a penalty kick. She beat SDSU (2-6-0) goalkeeper Jenn Davis for her second goal of the season.

That was all the offense Katie Stombaugh and Kelli Reed would need in the net. The two goalies split time and the Bison defense preserved its first shutout in 2004 by holding the Jackrabbit offense to 11 total shots. Stombaugh had two saves and Reed one in the win.

Overall, head coach Pete Cuadrado was pleased with the efforts of his squad. “We got a chance to get a lot of people some playing time, and as a whole, we really played well.”

The Bison received another solid performance from the veteran core of players. Christensen, Rodgers, Panzer, Becky Skrypek, and Erin Tierney all registered shots on goal in the contest. Bison freshmen Michelle Martinez and Laura Hermanson continued to take advantage of playing time, also posting shots on goal.

Rodgers assist now gives her seven points on the season. Christensen and Panzer's goals upped their totals to six points and four points on the year respectively.

For their efforts, Bison co-captains Christensen and Brooke Hartman were recognized on the Bluejay Classic All-Tournament Team.

Next action for NDSU will be October 8th, when the Bison travel to Valparaiso, followed by back-to-back game days at IUPUI on October 10 and at Butler on October 11.
