Box Score MACOMB, Ill. ?North Dakota State freshman
Jami Rozell scored two goals in the Bison's 3-3 tie with Western Illinois Friday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. For the second time in three games, NDSU went into overtime. Western Illinois's Kelly Robyn Ruypers scored with just five second left in regulation to force the extra session.
NDSU out shot Western Illinois 17-15 in a game marred by fouls and yellow cards (NDSU received four yellow cards and Western Illinois one).
Rozell, a freshman forward from Muskogee, Okla., put the Bison on the scoreboard first just before half time when she headed in a ball from junior
Angie Stenson (Maple Grove, Minn.) at 40:35.
Less than a minute later, NDSU head coach
Pete Cuadrado drew up another flow play and Rozell found the back of the net again. She rebounded a shot off Westerwind goalie Julie Remes and gave the Bison a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
“That's something that we work on in practice all the time,” said Cuadrado. “We are making better steps forward in improving our scoring chances.”
Western Illinois responded immediately after the break, scoring two goals a minute and a half apart. WIU's Kelly Warner and Laura Amador each scored to even the score.
Bison sophomore
Jessica Parker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) put NDSU back in front at 83:34 when she headed in a corner kick from Bison captain
Carly Christensen (New Brighton, Minn.). Parker is coming off a 2003 season in which she scored eight goals, including three game-winning goals.
Parker was seconds away from notching her first game-winner of 2004, but the lead would not hold up for NDSU as Ruypers last second miracle was answered at 89:55. She scored on a long ball over the top of the Bison defense.
NDSU tallied four shots in the first overtime but could not put home the game winner. Bison goalkeeper
Kelli Reed (Byron, Minn.) took over net duties in overtime for starter
Katie Stombaugh (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and came up with two crucial saves. Stombaugh stopped three WIU chances in regulation.
“It's going to be tough playing away from home all the time, but we're learning to play through it,” Cuadrado noted. “Taking care of a lead on the road is something that will come from experience.”
Next action for North Dakota State is Sunday, September 5 when they travel to Springfield, Mo. to face Drury. Kickoff is at noon.
It will be a reunion of sorts for Cuadrado, who coached against Drury of the Missouri Valley Conference when he was an assistant at Illinois State.
