NDSU Soccer Opens Final Home Stand With 1-0 Win Against Utah Valley State

Box Score

FARGO, N.D.?The North Dakota State women's soccer team scored its tenth win of the season with a 1-0 victory at home against Utah Valley State College on Friday, Oct. 21, at the Ellig Sports Complex.

With a scoreless tie entering the second period, sophomore midfielder Kelsey Hohol scored the lone goal in the contest when she struck the net with a shot from inside the box in the 70th minute.

For setting up the game-winning shot, the freshman tandem of Stacey Howell and Nicole Rand received an assist on the play.

“Stacey (Howell) made a great move on the endline to get around a defender,” NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “But give Kelsey (Hohol) credit. She can run all day long and it took a lot as a midfielder to get all the way downfield to be in that position.”

By negating nine shots, Karli Kopietz recorded her seventh shutout of the year in goal for the Bison. With two games remaining, Kopietz is one match shy of tying Margaret Palo's 1996 school mark of eight shutouts in a season. Kopietz is also nine saves away from tying the single-season school mark of 98 set by Kelly Tierney in 2002.

Overall, the Bison defense has picked up eight shutouts on the year while holding its opponents to 0.79 goals per game.

“We take pride in our defense,” Cuadrado said. “We have some veterans back there that never stop battling.”

In the final tally, NDSU led in shots 16-13 while dominating in corner kick opportunities 13-2.

The Bison return to action at home on Sunday, Oct. 23, for senior day versus South Dakota State. Kickoff is set for noon. NDSU will honor its six seniors prior to the start of the match.
