Bison Men Clinch Winning Season, Move Into Independent Title Game

FORT MYERS, Fla.--Myron Green scored a team-high 21 points and David Erbes added 14 as the North Dakota State men's basketball team clinched a winning season with a 75-55 victory over South Dakota State on Friday, Feb. 18, in the semifinal round of the National Independent Tournament at Florida Gulf Coast University.

North Dakota State won for the 10th straight game to improve to 15-11 with two games remaining on its schedule.  The Bison will play the winner of Friday night's game between Florida Gulf Coast and Puerto Rico-Bayamon for the tournament championship on Saturday, Feb. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. CT.

Erbes, making his first start in seven games, scored six of North Dakota State's first 11 points as the Bison started the game on an 11-0 run.  South Dakota State (8-17) trimmed the deficit to one point late in the first half before NDSU reclaimed a 31-25 halftime lead.

The Bison were 14 of 28 from the floor for 50 percent in the second half, but NDSU more importantly was 11-for-12 at the foul line after the break.  North Dakota State made all eight of its free throws in the final two minutes while scoring the game's final 12 points.

Green and Erbes were the only Bison players to finish in double figures, but every NDSU player scored at least two points.  Phil Hahn had nine, Dotun Obadina scored seven, and Adam Dobmeier and Brandon Smith had six apiece.

Green was 6-for-10 overall including a 4-for-5 night at the 3-point line, 5-for-7 at the foul line, plus six rebounds and five assists.  Smith tied his career high for the second straight game with five rebounds and also had four assists and three steals.

Ben Beran scored 24 points to lead South Dakota State, while Steve Holdren and Luke Geiver each had 10.

The Bison outrebounded the Jacks 20-11 in the second half and NDSU had a 36-32 overall advantage on the glass.  Green and Beran each had six boards.

Both teams played nine players in the game.  NDSU's bench outscored South Dakota State's reserves 23-2.

The Bison and Jackrabbits are scheduled to play again in both teams' season finale Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will be the back end of a doubleheader with the schools' women's teams.
