Four-Run First Inning Enough for Sac State; Bison Lose Sixth Straight

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Sacramento State struck for four runs in the first inning and went on to a 6-1 win over North Dakota State in the second of a four-game college baseball series Friday, Feb. 25.

Sacramento State starter Ethan Katz earned the win.  Katz (1-2) worked seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out five.

NDSU starter Terry Tchida (0-2) lasted only one inning, surrendering four runs on three hits and three walks.

Freshman Shane Bushland worked six strong innings of relief, scattering six hits, fanning three and walking none while holding the Hornets (4-6) to two runs.

North Dakota State (0-6) didn't score until the sixth inning.

Tyrus Powe led off with a single and Nathan Thomas singled him to second one out later.  Powe scored when Kole Zimmerman's ground ball went into left field under the glove of Sac State third baseman Pedro Santiago.

NDSU had seven base hits in the game.  Thomas finished 2-for-4 in his first start of the year at catcher, Powe was 2-for-3, and the Bison got hits from Charles Magedanz, Greg Plecki and Tim Erickson.

Zimmerman was 0-for-4 officially and had a nine-game hitting streak snapped.

Sac State got two hits apiece from Santiago, Brett Flowers and David Flores.

The teams are scheduled to close out the series with two nine-inning games Saturday, Feb. 26, beginning at 11 a.m. PT.
