Winnipeg?s Lindsey Wegner Signs to Play Volleyball at North Dakota State

FARGO, N.D.--Winnipeg native Lindsey Wegner has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her education and play women's volleyball at North Dakota State University.

That announcement was made today by NDSU head volleyball coach Zaundra Bina.

The addition of Wegner brings NDSU's freshman class to four. Outside hitters Kelly Lopez (Glyndon, Minn.) and Kristen Hille (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) both committed during November's early signing period, and setter Bethany Boelter (Fairbault, Minn.) has been accepted for admission to the university and will play volleyball for the Bison.

"We are very excited to add Lindsey to our roster. She is an exceptional athlete," Bina said. "She is very quick and jumps very high. Her strength is her explosiveness and her jumping ability."

Wegner, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter, attends College Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau in Winnipeg, where the volleyball team has made it to the AAA provincial tournament the past two seasons. Wegner was named the school's volleyball MVP as a junior.

An all-around athlete, Wegner was a four-year starter in soccer as a halfback and in badminton playing mixed doubles.

Bina says that Wegner, who plans to study optometry or biology at NDSU, attends a French-immersion school, so all of her classes are in French. "She has really impressive academic credentials. She was intrigued by NDSU in terms of the quality academic institution that it is," Bina said.

North Dakota State finished 13-20 overall last year and placed fourth in the Division I independent tournament.

The 2005 season will be NDSU's third year of a three-year transition to full Division I membership.
