Bushland Fans 11 as Bison Pound Concordia

Box Score

FARGO, N.D.--Right-hander Shane Bushland struck out a season-high 11 batters and North Dakota State pounded out 20 hits in a 17-3 rout of Concordia-Moorhead in college baseball Monday, May 2, at Newman Outdoor Field.

Bushland, a true freshman from Moorhead, Minn., pitched all nine innings for the Bison (5-34-1) to record his second complete game of the year.  He scattered six hits and allowed only one base on balls.

Concordia (13-17) hit a pair of home runs, though, to keep the game close early on.

North Dakota State led 2-0 after one inning thanks to a two-run homer by catcher Kole Zimmerman, but Cobber third baseman Brian Schumacher hit the first pitch of the second inning out to right-center field to trim NDSU's lead to 2-1.

A leadoff walk to Scott Halupczok in the top of the third and a two-run homer by ninth-hitting second baseman Bryant Bergeson put Concordia ahead 3-2.

Zimmerman doubled in the game-tying run in the bottom of the third, designated hitter Matt Freudenthal stroked a run-scoring single, and first baseman Ryan Langlais hit a two-run double to right-center to give the Bison a 6-3 advantage.

NDSU scored seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.

All 10 players to enter the NDSU lineup hit safely.  Shortstop Matt Mossey led the way with a 4-for-5 night.  Mossey scored twice and drove in three runs.

Freudenthal was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a stolen base, and two runs scored.

Zimmerman, Langlais, Tim Erickson, Charles Magedanz and Greg Plecki each had two hits.

Erickson extended his hitting streak to eight games, and Zimmerman's third-inning double moved his season total to 14 for a tie at 10th place on the single-season record list.

Schumacher finished 2-for-4 for the Cobbers and designated hitter Nick Esala was 2-for-3.

Starting pitcher Kevin Engebretson threw four innings and took the loss.  Engebretson allowed eight runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out one.

North Dakota State is scheduled to play at the University of Minnesota at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.
