Bison Fall Behind Early, Lose to South Dakota State in Three Straight

FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State got behind early and could not recover as South Dakota State defeated the Bison in the seventh match of the Doublewood Inn Classic 30-18, 30-23, 30-23  in college women's volleyball Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Bison Sports Arena.

Setter Kristie Klusaw served the first nine points of the first game and the Jackrabbits never looked back as they did not relinquish the lead.  South Dakota State (5-6 season, 3-0 tournament) had six aces in the first set, four of them by Klusaw who also guided the Jackrabbit offense with 39 assists.

North Dakota State (0-8 season, 0-3 tournament) showed some improved defense in second and third games tallying a match total 10 blocks.  Christy Stuewe led the way five block assists, followed by Lindsay Shockman-Rogers and Kelly Kaufmann with four apiece.

It wasn't enough though as South Dakota State outnumbered the Bison in kills 49-27.  Minette Ridenour led the way with 17 and was helped out by Kristina Martin who had 12 kills.

Kim Hebl led the offensive attack with eight kills for the Bison.  The Bison struggled attacking the ball, only being able to attack at a .085 clip.

Kelly Lopez led the Bison defense with 10 digs. 

Minette Ridenour had a team-high 13 digs to go along with her 17 kills.  Ridenour accomplished her third consecutive double-double at the tournament to go along with the two she had against Wisconsin-Green Bay and Sam Houston State.

The Jackrabbits finished the tournament with a 3-0 record.  North Dakota State will wrap up tournament play against Wisconsin-Green Bay at 7 p.m. Saturday.
