FARGO, N.D.--Citing fundamental differences in coaching philosophies, North Dakota State University Director of Women's Athletics Lynn Dorn announced that she has accepted the resignation of head volleyball coach Zaundra Bina. Coach Bina will step down immediately rather than continuing to serve until June 30, 2006.
A nationwide search for a new coach will begin immediately.
"In accepting Coach Bina's resignation," said Dorn, "I recognize underlying fundamental philosophical differences were not being resolved. And that it would be in the best interest of Coach Bina, our student-athletes and Bison athletics to make a change."
Bina, who returned to her alma mater in 1995, directed the Bison to a 5-31 record in 2005. She led NDSU to a fourth-place finish in the Division I independent tournament and a 13-20 overall record in 2004, the first year of Division I play.
"As an NDSU alumna, I am honored to have served as the North Dakota State volleyball coach for 11 years. I appreciate the NDSU community and the quality relationships I have. I look forward to the new opportunities for myself," said Bina.
During her 16-year collegiate coaching career, including five years at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., Bina compiled a 390-173 mark and a winning percentage of .693. At NDSU, her teams had a 257-119 record and a .684 winning percentage.
NDSU put together back-to-back NCAA Division II region and North Central Conference championships in 1998 and 1999 for the first time since 1991-1992. The Bison made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, placing second in 1998. In 2001, NDSU became only the second league team to go through the double round-robin schedule with one loss.
Bina was a two-time NCC All-Academic selection during her playing days at NDSU and she emphasizes hard work in the classroom as well as on the volleyball court. Seven of her Bison teams, along with her 1993 Augustana squad, received the AVCA Team Academic Award.
Bina earned her master's degree in education and bachelor's degree in business administration from NDSU.
After serving as an assistant coach at Fargo Shanley High School for two years, she directed the 1988 Fargo North High School squad to a 31-2 record and the North Dakota Class A state championship.
North Dakota State, in its third year of a five-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I, is eligible for the NCAA volleyball and wrestling tournaments next season.
