Box Score FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Seven-footers Jason Smith and Stuart Creason combined for 45 points and Colorado State made 28 free throws to defeat North Dakota State 82-80 in college men's basketball Monday.
Smith made 11 of 14 free throws for the Rams (8-2), who were 28-for-35 at the line. He finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Ben Woodside had 20 points and six assists to lead North Dakota State, including two 3-pointers in the final 1:06 that gave the Bison (6-4) chances to win.
NDSU was down 68-58 with 6:24 left in the game before making seven of its next 10 shots to tie the game. Woodside's third of four 3-pointers on the night made it 77-77 with 1:06 to go.
Colorado State answered on the next possession when Cory Lewis nearly traveled on his way for an open backdoor layup to make it 79-77.
CSU guard Tyler Smith went to the line with 25 seconds left, making the first and missing the second, but he was fouled after corraling his own rebound and stretched the Rams' lead to 82-77 with 22 seconds left.
Woodside and Brett Winkelman missed 3-pointers on NDSU's next possession before Woodside struck from the right side on an out-of-bounds play for the final margin.
The Bison, who also trailed by 10 points midway through the first half, closed the period on a 9-2 run to make it 35-34 Colorado State at intermission.
Winkelman scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half.
Andre Smith scored 16 points for the Bison, including 10 in the second half. That was despite missing 7 minutes in the second half after being hit in the head on a layup try.
Mike Nelson scored 14 points and had five assists for the Bison. Reserve guard Austin Pennick scored a career-high eight points on 4-of-5 shooting plus two assists and two steals.
NDSU shot 52 percent compared to Colorado State's 50 percent, including 9 of 18 from the 3-point line. The Bison were just 5-for-9 at the free-throw line.
Colorado State had a 35-30 rebounding edge. Winkelman had eight and Andre Smith had seven for the Bison.
North Dakota State returns home to face Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday, Dec. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo.
