Box Score FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State clinched its fourth straight winning season in men's basketball with a 93-67 victory over NAIA nationally ranked Mayville State before a crowd of 3,019 at the Bison Sports Arena on Friday, Feb. 10.
North Dakota State, which has won 10 of its last 13 games, is now 11-1 at home and 15-10 for the season with three games remaining.
The Bison shot 51 percent from the field to dispatch the Comets, who entered with a No. 9 ranking in NAIA Division II but slipped to 21-5 on the year.
NDSU's duo of forward Brett Winkelman and guard Mike Nelson combined to make 21 of 28 field goal attempts.
Winkelman completed his second double double of the year with 27 points and 13 rebounds--both career highs. Nelson also had career bests with 22 points and six assists.
North Dakota State's 45-33 lead at halftime was its biggest margin to that point of the game, but the Bison gradually pulled away in the second period.
A layup by Winkelman with 8:43 left gave the Bison a 25-point advantage, 73-48.
The Bison outrebounded Mayville State 49-30, led by Winkelman's 13 and the nine rebounds of forward Andre Smith, who scored 13 points.
Reserve guard Phil Hahn hit 4 of 7 three-pointers for 12 points and dished out five assists.
North Dakota State hit 20 of 30 foul shots in the game, including 8 of 10 by guard Ben Woodside, who was 0-for-9 from the field. Woodside collected six rebounds, five assists and made three steals in an otherwise solid performance.
Centerman Archie Weatherspoon scored 12 points and forward Monty Rogers put in 10 points to lead Mayville State.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play at South Dakota State next Saturday, Feb. 18. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena in Brookings.
NDSU closes out the home schedule Feb. 22 against the University of Mary, and the Bison travel to IPFW on Feb. 26 to finish the year.
