Box Score FARGO, N.D.--After giving up an early goal, the North Dakota State women's soccer team scored five in the first half to put away the University of Mary 5-1 in the regular-season opener on Friday, Aug. 25, at the Ellig Sports Complex.
Alyssa Deutscher got the Marauders on the board in the 7th minute with a header from a well placed ball from teammate Danielle Mayo. It would be the only shot Mary would attempt for the rest of the first half as the Bison stormed back with three goals in a three-minute span.
Jestina Orlando connected off of a setup played into the box by Danielle Thompson and Chelsea Body to even the score in the 14th minute. Moments later, senior Sarah Panzer lofted a direct free kick from 20 yards out over a wall of Marauders to give the Bison the lead.
Michelle Martinez connected with strikes in the 17th, 20th and 32nd minute to add the the Bison tally. The hat trick moves Martinez, in her third season at NDSU, into a tie for eighth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 17 career goals.
Junior Jessica Nei and freshman Monica Morgan split time in goal for the Bison with Morgan stopping two shots.
NDSU outshot Mary 17 to 4 and held an advantage in corner kicks 7 to 1.
"We started a little slow and didn't finish some early chances," NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "But give credit to Mary, they came out ready to play."
The Bison hit the road for a contest against the University of Minnesota on Sunday, Aug. 27. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
