Box Score FARGO, N.D.?Ninety minutes wasn't enough for either North Dakota State (3-1-1) or Weber State (2-2-2) to score in the final game of the Bison Invitational Tournament held at the Ellig Sports Complex on Sunday, Sept. 10. It turned out 110 minutes wasn't enough either.
The Bison and the Wildcats fought through two overtime periods without breaking the opponent's defense, resulting in NDSU's first tie of the season.
With the point awarded for the match added to the three collected with a win over IUPUI on Friday, NDSU was granted the Bison Invitational Tournament championship with IUPUI taking second after defeating South Dakota State 3-1 in the early match. Weber State placed third with two ties and SDSU finished fourth with a loss and a tie.
Leading the way for the Bison, defender Sarah Panzer was named tournament MVP after directing the NDSU defense which allowed only one goal in 200 minutes of play.
Also named to the all-tournament team for the Herd were juniors Jami Rozell and Patty Romeo and sophomore Jestina Orlando.
The Bison had three opportunities to take the lead in regulation. Early in the first period, Michelle Martinez took a shot which struck the crossbar and harmlessly deflected back into play. In the 42nd minute, Ashley Chandler flicked a header into open space in front of the net only to have the ball sail left and out of bounds.
In the second half, Martinez controlled the ball while being flanked by two Wildcat defenders and took a strong shot only to be scooped up by WSU goalkeeper Karen Long.
NDSU had several shots for the golden goal in the second overtime with a flurry of activity in front of the net which resulted in a pair of saves by Long. Martinez attempted the first shot in the 106th minute while a Kelsey Hohol header almost ended the match moments later.
Long finished the contest with five saves to equal Bison counterpart Monica Morgan.
“I thought our effort was really good throughout the game,” NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “It's disappointing that we had some chances, but just didn't get them on frame.”
The tie breaks an 11-game win streak for NDSU at home, but extends an unbeaten streak to 12 games. The last scoreless game the Bison were involved in was Nov. 2, 2002, when NDSU hosted Minnesota-Duluth. The Bison Invitational was the first home tournament for NDSU since 2000. They improved their all-time record in home tournaments to 7-2-1.
The Bison conclude their four-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 17, when they host Drake University (2-3-1). Kickoff is slated for noon.
