
North Dakota State Strong in 71-63 Road Win at Utah Valley State

OREM, Utah--Balanced North Dakota State University withstood a late charge by Utah Valley State College to record a 71-63 win over the host Wolverines in a Division I Independent women's basketball game played Saturday, Jan. 27, before a crowd of 323 at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
It was North Dakota State's second road win of the season, the other coming against Montana State during Thanksgiving weekend. Utah Valley State (10-9) has lost seven in a row.
North Dakota State's Kayla Dahlen and Lisa Bue went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 58 seconds to secure the win. Bue led the Bison with 16 points. NDSU hit 13-of-15 free throws overall for 86.7 percent.
Utah Valley State cut the deficit to two points several times in the second half the last coming with 4:35 left on a pair free throws by Rebekah Peterson. Peterson led the Wolverines with 23 points, while Robyn Fairbanks had "double-double" with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
However, the Bison kept UVSC at a distance. Danni Heintzelman scored a season-high 15 points, including several key buckets down the stretch. She came up with an important blocked shot and several rebounds as Utah Valley State rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half.
North Dakota State built a 33-25 lead at halftime. The Bison went on a 12-0 run to close out the final seven minutes of the first period. NDSU gained a 26-25 lead with 3:34 left on an Ali Sonstelie three-pointer.
Heintzelman tallied a nine points as eight different NDSU players scored in the opening period and nine snared at least one rebound. Brenda Slyt scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
NDSU hit 40 percent from the field compared to 36.9 percent for Utah Valley State. The Bison held a 43-42 advantage in rebounding, and committed only 14 turnovers compared to 19 for the Wolverines.
North Dakota State (8-9) is scheduled to host South Dakota State (15-5) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Bison Sports Arena. The Jackrabbits won 64-52 at the University of Texas-Pan American on Saturday afternoon.
NDSU and Utah Valley State play again at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 in Fargo.
