Wright State Rally Deflates North Dakota State 87-80 at Holiday Beach Classic

Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.--Sheylani Peddy scored a game-high 31 points and sparked a late rally as Wright State University defeated North Dakota State 87-80 on Sunday, Nov. 25, in the final game of the Cal Poly Holiday Beach Classic played at Mott Gym.

The Raiders (1-5) broke a six-game losing streak that dated back to the final game of last season.

Amanda Girodat, who had a career-high 12 assists, found Jerri Penley inside for a layup to put NDSU ahead 70-62 with 8:23 left. The Bison led for nearly the entire game, withstanding several surges from Wright State.

However, Peddy scored 10 of her team's 12 points during the stretch that saw Wright State rally from the eight-point deficit. Her three-pointer tied the game at 74-all with 4:08 remaining. WSU went on outscore the Bison 13-6 during the final four minutes.

Wright State's Kanisha Ward drove to the basket for the eventual go-ahead layup with 3:01 left. Whitney Lewis converted a pair of free throws that extended the Raiders' lead to 78-74 at the 2:27 mark. A pair of turnovers combined with a missed jumper stalled NDSU's attempts to chip away as Peddy scored again to put WSU ahead 80-74 with 2:10 remaining.

Peddy hit 11 of 18 from the field including a trio of three-pointers and 6 of 8 free throws. Peddy and Lewis both landed a spot on the all-tournament team, while Fairfield's Sabra Wrice was named the Classic's MVP.

Peddy led a group of four Raiders scoring in double-figures. Lewis had 18 points and seven rebounds, Sierra Crayton recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Ward added 11 points.

North Dakota State led 47-46 at halftime in the offensive-minded contest. The Bison held the lead from the opening tip and were tied just once at 28-28 with 6:59 left on a Peddy steal and layup. Emily Moran had the hot hand and scored 16 of her team-high 22 points in the opening period.

The Bison built their biggest lead at 25-15 with 11:36 remaining in the first half as Girodat found Brenda Slyt for an easy bucket inside. Slyt scored 16 points.

NDSU shot a season-high 58.1 percent in the first half and 49.2 percent overall. Lisa Bue netted 12 of her 16 points in the first half. Bue, who recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds, was named to the all-tournament team.

Wright State connected on 22 of 31 attempts from the free throw line compared to 15 of 18 for NDSU. Slyt, Girodat and Moran all went 4 of 4 from the foul line. The Bison held a 38-36 advantage on the boards, but the Raiders claimed 15 offensive rebounds that turned into traditional three-point plays on several occasions.

North Dakota State (1-4) is scheduled to play at the University of Idaho (0-5) at 7:30 p.m. (Central) Saturday, Dec. 1, in Moscow. The Bison have lost three in a row. Weber State beat the Vandals 56-48 on Sunday.
