Box Score SHREVEPORT, La.--Brett Winkelman scored a game- and career-high 39 points to lead North Dakota State to a 102-99 overtime victory at Centenary in Summit League men's basketball Saturday, Dec. 8.
Winkelman was 13 of 18 overall and 10-for-12 at the foul line. He ran his career point total to 1,014, becoming the 26th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
North Dakota State (5-5, 1-1) made all nine of its foul shots in the final 2:19 of regulation before Ben Woodside's basket with 32 seconds left tied the game at 86. NDSU had trailed since the 18:23 mark of the first half.
Woodside's 3-point play gave the Bison a six-point lead with 90 seconds left in overtime, and he made his final four foul shots to ice the victory.
Like Winkelman, Woodside was 10-for-12 at the foul line and the Bison finished 33 of 43 as a team. Centenary made 28 of 41 free throws, but missed 4 of 5 in overtime.
Nick Stallings had 12 points in the first seven minutes as Centenary (6-4, 1-1) went ahead by as many as 10 points in the first half.
The Gents led 22-12 before North Dakota State went on an 11-4 run to pull within three points. Winkelman made three straight field goals in that span, including back-to-back 3-pointers before Woodside's second basket cut the deficit to 26-23.
Centenary closed the first half on a 7-2 run to take a nine-point halftime lead, 44-35. The Gents led by 12 twice in the second half.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Mike Nelson and Winkelman cut the deficit to six points with 13:18 to play, and they struck again with a pair of 3-point plays to pull NDSU within 66-62 with 9:16 left.
Four Bison players scored in double figures. Woodside finished with 23, Nelson had 21 and Michael Tveidt had 14 off the bench.
NDSU had a 40-32 rebounding advantage, led by Winkelman's nine and eight from Nelson.
North Dakota State returns home next week to take on former head coach Tim Miles and the Colorado State Rams in non-conference play. Game time is 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Bison Sports Arena.
The Rams are 5-4 after losing at Minnesota on Saturday night, 91-74.
