FARGO, N.D.--Emily Moran netted a career-high 27 points as North Dakota State committed no turnovers in the second half in defeating the University of Texas-Pan American 69-57 in a Division I independent women's basketball game played before 1,233 spectators Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Bison Sports Arena.
NDSU has won four in a row and four of its last five games. The Bison are 5-2 against Division I independents this season and made up for a last second 59-57 loss to UTPA on Jan. 25 in Edinburg. The Lady Broncs (10-17) have lost four in a row and five of their last six games.
The 5-foot-7 Moran stood tall and scored 16 of her game-high total in the second half. She sparked a 13-4 run during the first five minutes of the final half that helped the Bison pull away for its fourth home win in five tries and finish 9-3 at the BSA in 2007.
Overall, Moran connected on 8-of-19 field goal attempts including a career-high 6-of-14 from the three-point stripe to chalk up the highest point production from a Bison player since the 2004-05 season. She added three assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Moran's touch led to NDSU hitting a season-best 9-of-24 from the three-point arc against the Lady Broncs. The Bison hit 42.6 percent from the field compared to 41.5 percent for UTPA.
The key stat was turnovers in this low possession contest. The Bison didn't commit a turnover in the second half and equalled a season-low with 10 for the game. Texas-Pan American had 15 turnovers that led to 17 NDSU points.
Amanda Girodat dished out a career-high 11 assists that led to several easy looks for teammates like Lisa Bue and Brenda Slyt, who finished with 15 and 14 points apiece.
North Dakota State trailed 31-29 at halftime. It was a see-saw first half which featured 10 lead changes and six ties. The biggest lead in the opening half was five points by UTPA at 16-11 on a three-pointer from Tamara Vaughn with 13:41 left to play. Much like she did in the first outing, Vaughn scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the first half.
North Dakota State (12-10) is scheduled to play South Dakota State (20-5) at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at Frost Arena. SDSU edged Utah Valley State 61-59 on Saturday night.
It was the final home game for four NDSU seniors, Katie Dahlen, Kayla Dahlen, Danni Heintzelman and Girodat.
