Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Ben Woodside scored 23 points and Andre Smith added 22 as North Dakota State defeated South Dakota State 86-69 in college men's basketball Saturday.
North Dakota State won its ninth straight home game before a crowd of 4,059 at the Bison Sports Arena. NDSU is 11-1 on its home court and 18-8 overall.
The victory gave North Dakota State its first regular-season home-and-away sweep of South Dakota State since the 1990-91 season.
NDSU had a 36-28 halftime lead and opened the second half on a 13-3 run that gave NDSU an 18-point advantage -- its biggest lead of the night -- 46-29 with 16:37 left.
SDSU (5-23) narrowed the gap to nine with 5:44 left on a Matt Cadwell layup that made it 69-60.
The Bison closed out the game making 11 of 18 free throws to slowly pull away.
NDSU was 31-for-43 at the free throw line altogether, including a 12-for-12 effort by Woodside.
Smith had 16 points and eight rebounds in the first half alone. He and Brett Winkelman each had nine rebounds to help NDSU to a 37-26 advantage on the glass.
Bison guard Mike Nelson added 16 points and Winkelman scored 15 plus a career-high three blocked shots for the Bison.
NDSU shot 55 percent from the field, including 65 percent (13-for-20) in the second half.
Jose Frias had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead South Dakota State. Kai Williams finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.
North Dakota State hosts New Jersey Institute of Technology next Thursday, March 1, and IPFW next Saturday, March 3, at the Bison Sports Arena.
Tipoff is at 7 p.m. both nights as the Bison shoot for their first 20-win season as a Division I program.
