Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C.--Shortstop Matt Mossey hit a solo home run and left-hander Jake Laber struck out nine to carry North Dakota State to a 4-2 victory over Charleston Southern in college baseball Friday.
Mossey finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs. He had an RBI single in the third, his homer in the fifth held up as the game-winning run, and his sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Bison (1-0) an important insurance run.
Laber recovered from a rocky two-run second inning to strike out seven batters and allow just four singles over the next six-plus scoreless frames.
The Buccaneers (7-7) chased Laber in the ninth inning with a lead-off single by Will Rodriguez, but Bison transfer Ben Mathiason came on to get a fielder's choice and a game-ending ground-ball double play for the save.
Mossey was the only NDSU player with multiple hits. Second baseman Matt Watson and designated hitter Shannon Ekermans both had doubles and finished 1-for-4.
Bison left fielder Kole Zimmerman's infield groundout in the third tied the game at 2 and was the team's only other RBI.
It was NDSU's first win in a season-opener since 2002.
The Bison and Buccaneers are scheduled to play a doubleheader at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday.
