Charleston Southern Rallies For Doubleheader Sweep of North Dakota State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHARLESTON, S.C.--Charleston Southern scored five runs in its final at-bat to complete a 6-4, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of North Dakota State in college baseball Saturday, March 3.

Trailing 4-0 in the seventh inning of the nightcap, the Buccaneers (9-7) got a two-run double from Wes Brundridge to tie the game before Bison reliever Ben Mathiason issued back-to-back walks to force in the winning run.

North Dakota State (1-2) scored single runs in the third and fourth before Sebastian Miles drove in two with a single in the fifth inning for the four-run cushion.

It seemed enough for starting pitcher Matt Mossey, who breezed through the first three innings with five strikeouts and had a one-hitter into the seventh inning.  He was responsible for four runs and finished with six K's but did not factor in the decision.

Bison catcher Gavin Hofer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for NDSU.

In the opener, North Dakota State got two hits apiece from designated hitter Kole Zimmerman and outfielder Luke Otto.

Zimmerman's solo homer in the sixth got the Bison within 3-1, but the Buccaneers manufactured three runs in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and two sacrifice flies to go up 6-1.

NDSU center fielder Greg Plecki had an RBI double in the seventh and later scored on Mossey's two-run, two-out double that made the score 6-4.

Right-hander Jeff Hille took the loss for the Bison, allowing five runs on seven hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

North Dakota State and Charleston Southern will close out the series with a single game at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 4.
