Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C.--Starting pitcher Seth Foley worked into the eighth inning with six strikeouts, and center fielder Greg Plecki was 2-for-5 with three runs scored to lead North Dakota State to a 7-5 win and a four-game series split with Charleston Southern in college baseball Sunday, March 4.
Foley, a junior-college transfer from Kingston, Idaho, allowed just three hits through the first five innings as North Dakota State (2-2) built a 4-0 lead.
Designated hitter Kole Zimmerman had an RBI single and third baseman Ryan Langlais followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Bison a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
NDSU tacked on single runs in the fourth with an RBI single from first baseman Sebastian Miles and in the fifth with a bases-loaded walk to right fielder Luke Otto.
It was 4-3 after seven innings before the Bison scored three times in the eighth, starting with the Nos. 9 and 1 hitters.
Second baseman Matt Watson hit a one-out double on a 1-2 count and he scored on the next play as leadoff-hitting left fielder Kenny Beese singled to left field on another 1-2 pitch.
The Bison went up 7-3 when Langlais reached on a two-out error by pitcher Payton Tweddale that plated Plecki and Beese with unearned runs.
Charleston Southern was back within two after Chris Krogmeier's RBI single and Sean Doherty's RBI fielder's choice in the eighth.
The Buccaneers got a leadoff double in the ninth from Wes Brundridge, but NDSU reliever Shannon Ekermans came on to get two strikeouts and an infield popup for his first save of the season.
Plecki was one of four Bison players with multiple hits. Shortstop Matt Mossey was 2-for-4 and teammates Miles and Beese both finished 2-for-5.
Zimmerman was 1-for-2 and drew three walks.
Foley (1-0) was responsible for all five Charleston Southern runs. He scattered eight hits and walked just two batters while throwing 106 pitches. Matt Bowar pitched one inning of scoreless relief.
Charleston Southern starter D.J. Throneburg (2-2) took the loss. He allowed six runs on 10 hits, walked five and struck out seven.
North Dakota State is scheduled to begin a three-game at Kansas State on Friday, March 9. First pitch is at 3 p.m. at Tointon Stadium in Manhattan, Kan.
