Box Score FARGO, N.D.--Ben Woodside scored 28 points and Brett Winkelman added 21 as North Dakota State held off UMKC 90-82 Saturday in Summit League men's basketball.
Woodside was 16-for-19 from the free-throw line for the Bison (10-9, 4-4). Winkelman was 7-for-8, and as a team, NDSU made 29 of 35 foul shots. Winkelman also had a game-high nine rebounds.
North Dakota State jumped out to a 9-0 lead and stretched the margin to 20 points twice in the first half on its way to a 43-29 halftime lead.
NDSU led by as many as 22 early in the second half, but UMKC (7-13, 2-5) went on a 13-0 run to get within 64-56 with 7:12 remaining.
Mike Nelson, who scored 19 points, stopped the run with a 3-pointer and NDSU never let the Kangaroos get closer than six points down the stretch. The Bison made 9 of 10 free throws in the final minute.
Woodside's 16 made free throws were one shy of the school record 17 set by Marv Bachmeier in 1959-60 and tied by Lance Berwald in 1983-84.
Dane Brumagin had 23 points and six rebounds for UMKC. Tim Blackwell had 18 points and Kenny Simms added 13.
The win moved North Dakota State into fifth place in The Summit League, 3 1/2 games behind league-leading Oral Roberts (12-5, 7-0) and one game out of third place.
NDSU hosts South Dakota State (7-12, 2-6) at 7 p.m. next Friday, Jan. 25. The Jackrabbits beat Southern Utah 66-62 on Saturday.
