Box Score FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State set three scoring records in a 128-64 romp of Mayville State in the men's basketball season opener Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Bison Sports Arena.
North Dakota State broke school records for points in a game, previously 123 against Minnesota State Moorhead in 1989, and margin of victory, previously 53 points against North Carolina Central last year.
And the Bison set a record for points in a half, making 20 of their first 24 shots en route to a 74-29 lead at halftime. The old record was 64 points in the first half against Valley City State in 1989.
Seven NDSU players scored in double-figures led by senior guard Ben Woodside, who scored 25 of his 28 in the first half. Brett Winkelman had 17 points, Michael Tveidt scored 14, Mike Nelson and Eric Carlson poured in 12 apiece, and teammates Dejuan Flowers and Austin Pennick each had 10.
Woodside passed Marv Bachmeier for fifth place on NDSU's all-time scoring list and now has 1,577 points in 86 games. Winkelman passed Mark Gibbons for 12th place and has 1,366 points in 86 games.
North Dakota State shot 60.8 percent from the floor, 47-for-79 overall and 12 of 19 on three-pointers. The Bison were 20-for-34 at the foul line.
NDSU scored 42 points off 22 Mayville State turnovers and had a 49-28 rebounding advantage. Flowers had eight rebounds and Winkelman and Lorenzo Riley had six boards each.
Dave Johnson had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Mayville State, which lost its sixth straight game to start the season. The Comets are members of the Dakota Athletic Conference in NAIA Division II.
A crowd of 2,257 was on hand.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play its next three games on the road beginning Saturday, Nov. 22, at Idaho. The Vandals are 1-2 following an 80-46 loss at Gonzaga on Tuesday night.
