THE COACHES: Saul Phillips (Wisconsin-Platteville, 1996) is in his first season as the North Dakota State head coach. Phillips was an assistant for the Bison the past three years. He came to NDSU from Wisconsin, where he was director of basketball operations for three years under Bo Ryan. He was an assistant coach for two seasons each at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Lake Superior State and was a graduate assistant at Wayne State in Nebraska for one year.

Scott Nagy (Delta State, 1988) is in his 13th season as head coach at South Dakota State with a career record of 243-139. Nagy was a graduate assistant at Illinois in 1988-89 and an assistant coach at SDSU for three seasons from 1990-93. He spent two seasons on the staff at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (1993-95) before being hired as head coach at SDSU in May 1995.

THE SERIES: Friday will be the 196th meeting between North Dakota State and South Dakota State dating back to the 1909-10 season. NDSU has a 102-93 advantage in the series including wins in the last three straight games. North Dakota State's home-and-away sweep of South Dakota State last year was the first in 16 seasons. NDSU won 78-60 in Brookings and 86-69 in Fargo. A win Friday would be NDSU's second sweep of the Jacks since 1990-91.

NDSU 90, SDSU 63:

Ben Woodside scored a game-high 25 points and Michael Tveidt hit four 3-pointers to spark North Dakota State to a 90-63 victory over South Dakota State Jan. 25. Woodside was 8-for-14 from the field and 8-for-10 at the free-throw line. He added six assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Bison.

Tveidt, a native of Pierre, S.D., finished with a career-high 16 points for NDSU. He had 14 points by the midway point of the first half, including two steals that led to baskets on a 15-0 Bison run. North Dakota State went ahead 33-11 at the 9:36 mark of the first half when Tveidt swished his third and fourth 3-pointers on consecutive possessions. The Bison doubled up SDSU by halftime, 56-28. Tveidt had made only 1 of 16 three-pointers in the first 19 games.

NDSU shot 64 percent in the first half and had 20 points off 12 SDSU turnovers before intermission. The Bison shot 53 percent for the game. Brett Winkelman had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists for NDSU. South Dakota State shot 44 percent overall. The Jacks got 17 points from Kai Williams, 12 points from Ben Beran, and a game-high eight rebounds from Anthony Cordova.

ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA STATE: The Bison are 13-13 overall and 7-8 in a tie for fifth place with Western Illinois in The Summit League after splitting a pair of road games last week. NDSU snapped a five-game road losing streak in the 73-44 win at UMKC last Thursday. It was the biggest margin of victory on the road for NDSU since a 35-point win at Bemidji State in December 1994. Southern Utah made 11 of its last 14 free-throws to hold on for a 72-67 win over NDSU last Saturday. The Bison trailed by 17 inside the 5 minutes to play, but NDSU climbed back with an 11-0 run and made eight of its last nine foul shots, including 6 of 6 by Ben Woodside in the last 90 seconds.

SHOOTING THE THREE: North Dakota State has jumped from 42nd to 7th in the NCAA national rankings for 3-point shooting percentage over the past three weeks. NDSU has shot better than 50 percent from the arc in three of the six games over that stretch, including a school-record 10-for-14 (.714) at Oakland, 14-for-23 (.609) at home to IUPUI, and 10-for-18 (.556) at UMKC. IUPUI is the national leader at 42.9 percent. NDSU will not officially rank among the NCAA leaders until next season.

MILESTONES: Twenty-four hundred and counting. NDSU won its 1,400th men's basketball game last Thursday at UMKC and lost its 1,000th game at Southern Utah last Saturday. The Bison have a .583 winning percentage in program history dating back to the 1897-98 season. This is the 109th season of men's basketball at NDSU. Only 13 other Division I programs list a longer history of basketball, led by Bucknell, Minnesota and Yale's 112 years each.

SINGLE-SEASON SCORING: Junior guard Ben Woodside enters the week sixth on NDSU's single-season scoring list in a tie with Jeff Askew at 548 points. Woodside needs 51 points to vault past Lance Berwald for second place. The single-season scoring record is 666 points by Denver TenBroek in 2002-03. TenBroek was the last Bison player to reach 500 points in a single season until Woodside did it this year. Twelve players have combined for fourteen 500-point seasons, and Brett Winkelman is four points shy of becoming the 13th player on that list.

WOODSIDE NOW 7th IN CAREER SCORING: Junior guard Ben Woodside ranks seventh in career scoring at North Dakota State with 1,498 points in 82 career games through last week. He passed Mike Kuppich (1,493 points from 1969-72) for seventh place in the Southern Utah game and needs 43 points to pass Brian Sand (1,540 points from 1992-96) for sixth place.

WOODSIDE AMONG CAREER LEADERS: Junior guard Ben Woodside is on pace to break NDSU's career scoring record next year, and he's quickly climbing several other career lists. Woodside ranks third in free throws made, fourth in 3-pointers made, and fourth in assists. He is sixth in free throws attempted and 3-pointers attempted. Here are the top five in each category and Woodside's ranking entering this week's game:

THREE BISON OVER 1,000 POINTS:

North Dakota State juniors Ben Woodside, Brett Winkelman and Mike Nelson all went over the career 1,000-point mark this season, and only one other North Dakota State team has had three players do it in the same season. It was in 1974-75 that juniors Mark Emerson and Steve Saladino and senior Mark Gibbons all went over 1,000 career points. Four other pairs have done it in the same season, including Bob Maier and Gerry Suman in 1966-67, Pat Driscoll and John Wojtak in 1970-71, Mike Driscoll and Brady Lipp in 1980-81, and Joe Regnier and Dan Wilberscheid in 1987-88.

WINKELMAN JOINS ELITE COMPANY:

Junior forward Brett Winkelman joined elite company when he grabbed his 500th career rebound at California on Saturday, Dec. 29. Winkelman became only the 14th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point and 500-rebound career milestones. He broke the 1,000-point mark at Centenary on Saturday, Dec. 8, and now ranks 14th in scoring with 1,287 points. His 591 rebounds rank 11th all-time.

WINKELMAN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: North Dakota State forward Brett Winkelman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 University Division men's basketball team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday, Feb. 7. Winkelman, a 6-foot-6 junior from Morris, Minn., has a 3.84 cumulative grade-point average in industrial engineering and management with a minor in business administration. He advances to the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® team to be announced Wednesday, Feb. 27.

Winkelman was selected last year as the third CoSIDA Academic All-American® in NDSU men's basketball history with a spot on the University Division second team. Drake senior Adam Emmenecker, Saint Louis graduate student Luke Meyer, Northern Colorado senior Thanasi Panagiotakopoulos and Kansas senior Sasha Kaun round out the District 7 team.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, student-athletes must have a 3.20 or better cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale, have sophomore athletic standing, and be a starter or key reserve for their team.

WINKELMAN ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: Junior forward Brett Winkelman was named The Summit League's Men's Athlete of the Month for December. Winkelman averaged 23.5 points and 9.0 rebounds over six games. He connected on 52 percent from the field, 57 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the free-throw line. Winkelman posted three straight double-doubles against Colorado State, Bucknell and California, plus he scored a career-high 39 points to go with nine rebounds in a 102-99 overtime win at Centenary, when he scored his 1,000th career point. He also collected his 500th career rebound, and he was named Summit League Player of the Week following his 26 points and 11 rebounds in the home win over former head coach Tim Miles and Colorado State.

WOODSIDE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH:

Junior guard Ben Woodside was named The Summit League's Men's Athlete of the Month for November. Woodside averaged 26.4 points, 5.4 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals over seven games. He shot 54 percent from the field, 48 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the foul line during the month. His scoring average of 26.4 ranked third nationally and he was also among the nation's leaders in assists, 3-pointers and 3-point percentage. Woodside posted his first collegiate double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds against Minot State and had back-to-back 30-point games with 39 at Tennessee Tech and 31 at Green Bay. He made 13-of-14 free throws at Tennessee Tech, one shy of his record 14-for-14.

WORKING THE GLASS:

After finishing in the top 10 nationally in rebounding margin the past two years, North Dakota State continues to outrebound its opponents on the backboards. NDSU has outrebounded opponents in 19 of the first 26 games, including a season-high +21 advantage at home to Western Illinois, 49-28. Only Rutgers (-6), Wisconsin-Green Bay (-2), Minnesota (-11), Oakland (-3) and Southern Utah (-2) have outrebounded the Bison this year.

WOODSIDE & WINKELMAN'S 39 ARE 10TH BEST: North Dakota State guard Ben Woodside's 39-point outburst at Tennessee Tech on Monday, Nov. 19, and forward Brett Winkelman's 39 at Centenary on Saturday, Dec. 8, are tied as the 10th best single-game scoring efforts in NDSU history. Woodside passed the 37 points by all-time leading scorer Denver TenBroek against Columbus State in November 2002. The school record is 53 points set by Lance Berwald at home to Minnesota State Mankato Feb. 11, 1984.

WOODSIDE, WINKELMAN ALL-TOURNAMENT:

North Dakota State guard Ben Woodside and forward Brett Winkelman were named to the all-tournament team at the Cal Golden Bear Classic last weekend. Woodside scored 31 points -- two shy of the tournament record -- in the first-round win over Bucknell, and he followed with 15 points against Cal in the championship. Winkelman posted double-doubles in both games. He scored 21 points and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds against Bucknell, and led the Bison with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Cal.

BISON THIRD IN BLUE RIBBON CHALLENGE: Florida, North Carolina Central, North Dakota State, Rutgers and Tennesse Tech played in the inaugural Blue Ribbon Challenge, a five-team round robin tournament sponsored by The Gazelle Group. Florida (4-0) won the tournament, Rutgers (3-1) was second, North Dakota State (2-2) was third, North Carolina Central (1-3) was fourth, and Tennessee Tech (0-4) was fifth.

BISON PICKED FOURTH IN THE SUMMIT: North Dakota State was picked to finish fourth in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, sports information directors and media. NDSU garnered four first-place votes and had 351 points behind preseason league favorite IUPUI (396), second-place Oral Roberts (393), and third-place Oakland (359). Two Bison players were selected to the preseason all-conference team. TOP 25 WINS: North Dakota State's short history in Division I has not been short on success. In addition to three straight winning seasons, the Bison have claimed two Top 25 wins on the road. NDSU first upset the 13th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers 62-55 at a soldout Kohl Center in Madison on Jan. 21, 2006. THE RECLASSIFICATION: North Dakota State is in the final year of a five-year NCAA reclassificiation from Division II to Division I. This is NDSU's first year as a member of The Summit League after three years as a Division I independent. The Bison are eligible for the Summit League regular-season championship, but NDSU will not participate in the league's postseason NCAA-qualifying championship tournament until becoming an active Division I member in 2008-09.
