Box Score BROOKINGS, S.D.--Jennifer Warkenthein scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead South Dakota State to an 81-61 win over North Dakota State in a Summit League women's basketball game played Saturday, Feb. 23, before a crowd of 4,377 in Frost Arena.
SDSU (14-2 Summit, 21-6) extended its current winning streak to 10 games to clinch at least a share of the league regular season championship, while NDSU had its six-game winning streak snapped.
Warkenthien sparked a 10-2 run midway in the first half that broke a 10-10 deadlock and put the Jackrabbits in control.
North Dakota State's Lisa Bue connected on a three-point field goal and Emily Moran hit a running jumper to tie the game with 13:11 left in the opening period. Bue scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She made 9 of 15 field goal attempts and hit all six free throw attempts.
South Dakota State regained the lead for good on the next trip down the floor when Stacey Oistad grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a layup. Morgan Meier found Warkenthien inside for an easy two, then three-pointers by Macie Michelson and Warkenthein put SDSU ahead 20-12 at the 9:19 mark.
The Jackrabbits gradually pulled away to build a 37-22 halftime lead. Warkenthein scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the first half.
North Dakota State shot only 25.7 percent from the field in the first half, but did bounce back to make 62.5 percent from the field in the second. However, the Bison were hampered by 22 turnovers that led to 21 SDSU points.
Any hopes for a comeback in the second half were dashed by South Dakota State's Ketty Cornemann, who scored 11 of her career-high 20 points during one stretch midway in the final period. Michelson finished with 11 points and Andrea Verdegan hit two key three-pointers. SDSU hit 8 of 15 from beyond the arc compared to 3 of 14 for the Bison.
The Jackrabbits hit 50.8 percent from the field compared to 40.7 for NDSU. Led by Warkenthien's 10 rebounds and eight from Oistad, South Dakota State held a 37-30 advantage on the boards. SDSU made 13 of 15 free throws, while NDSU finished 10 of 14.
Jerri Penley recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots for the Bison. Bue scored 20 points in a game for the seventh time this season and the 12th time in her career. She reached double-figures in scoring for the 24th time in 26 games.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host Oral Roberts (9-6 Summit, 15-11) at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in the Bison Sports Arena. The Bison then close out the regular season against Centenary (1-14 Summit, 4-21) at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3.
